Toxicity and Influencing Factors of Organic Substances in Drinking Water of a City's Supply Systems
To understand the biological toxicity and influencing factors of organic substances in drinking water in a certain city, the source water, finished water and tap water of two water plants in the city were collected from June 2018 to September 2019 to determine the inhibitory effect of samples organic extracts on luminescence of Vibrio fischeri, and correlations between effective concentration causing 50%luminescence inhibition(EC50)with the conventional water quality parameters[ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm(UV254)and dissolved organic carbon(DOC)]were investigated. The results showed that EC50 values for organic extracts of drinking water samples ranged from 0.23 to 98.97 REF(relative enrichment factor),with a median value of 3.37 REF.The hydrological period, conventional water treatment process, drinking water distribution process, and UV254 and DOC levels of the source water had no obvious impact on drinking water toxicity. For drinking water samples, the Spearman correlation coefficients of UV254 and DOC levels with EC50 values were-0.025(P=0.807)and-0.237(P=0.020),respectively,indicating that UV254 and DOC measurements cannot replace toxicity testing for monitoring the potential health risk of drinking water organic contaminants.
