Experience of home dwelling empty-nested older patients adjusting to Multiple Chronic Conditions from the perspective of positive psychology
Objective:To explore the experience of home dwelling empty-nested older patients adjusting to Multiple Chronic Conditions(MCCs),and improve the coping ability of MCCs.Methods:A descriptive qualitative approach was conducted and a total of 15 home dwelling empty-nested older patients with MCCs were enrolled for semi-structural in-depth interviews.Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis method was used to analyze the data.Results:Based on the PERMA(Positive emotion,Engagement,Relationship,Meaning,Achievement),five themes were extracted:showing positive emotions and having positive psychological capital;engaging in life and taking the initiative to adjust;receiving family and social support and maintaining good interpersonal relationships;seeking self-meaning and realizing self-worth;achieving accomplishments and reaching a positive life.Conclusion:In the management of MCCs,health professionals should pay attention to develop positive psychological capital of home dwelling empty-nested older patients,mobilize their ability of active adjustment and adopt appropriate adjustment strategies,emphasize the support of family and society,encourage the search for the meaning of ego,and finally achieve a positive life.
