Epidemiological characteristics of pertussis in China,2022
Objective To describe epidemiological characteristics of pertussis in China in 2022.Methods We collected data on pertussis cases that were reported to the China Disease Control and Prevention Information System in 2022 and conducted a descriptive epidemiological analysis. Results A total of 38 295 pertussis cases were reported in China in 2022,for an overall incidence of 2.71 cases per 100 000 population and an annual increase in incidence of 14.26%since 2018;0-4-,5-9-,10-14-,and≥ 15-year-olds accounted for 52.67%,40.27%,5.37%,and 1.69%of all cases,respectively;0-2-,3-5-,and 6-11-month-olds accounted for 40.63%,41.54%and 17.83%of infant cases.Among the 28 500 cases with diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis combined vaccine(DTP)vaccination records,19.05%,7.91%,7.87%,and 65.18%cases had received 0,1-2,3,or 4 doses of DTP before pertussis onset;respective number of doses among 3-5-month-old cases were 49.49%,49.28%,1.23%,and 0.00%,and among 5-9-year-old cases were 0.07%,0.02%,4.75%,and 95.16%.Conclusions The reported incidence of pertussis increased significantly in 2022 in China and was highest among children 0-9 years of age, particularly among infants who had not received DTP or had received fewer than 3 doses. We suggest enhancing timely and full-series pertussis vaccination for age-eligible children and promoting research on optimizing childhood pertussis immunization strategies.
