Diphtheria IgG antibody levels among a healthy population in Hangzhou city in 2018-2021
Objective To evaluate diphtheria antibody levels in a healthy population in Hangzhou city. Methods We used a stratified sampling method to recruit healthy people in 4 districts of Hangzhou during 2018-2021 and obtained serum samples from subjects. We tested sera for diphtheria IgG antibody using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to determine positivity rates and geometric mean concentrations(GMC).Results The overall positivity rate of diphtheria IgG antibody was 79.74%(1 086/1 362),and the GMC was 0.49 IU/mL.Positivity rates for 0-2-month-olds,3-11-month-olds,1-2-year-olds,3-5-year-olds,6-12-year-olds,13-19-year-olds,20-39-year-olds,and ≥40-year-olds were 77.36%,93.18%,97.16%,95.02%,92.65%,61.38%,67.46%,and 42.37%;respective GMCs were 0.33,0.65,0.70,0.67,0.72,0.28,0.22,and 0.15IU/mL.Multivariate analyses showed that age, region, diphtheria vaccination history, and time since vaccination were factors influencing positivity rate and GMC.Conclusions The diphtheria IgG antibody level was high among healthy people in Hangzhou but decreased with increasing age and time since diphtheria vaccination. We need to explore diphtheria immunization strategies for adolescents and adults.
