Neisseria meningitidis carriage in healthy people in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region:a cross-sectional survey in 2023
Objective To explore Neisseria meningitidis(Nm)carriage in a healthy population in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.Methods We used stratified random sampling to obtain throat swab samples from healthy individuals in 10 counties of 5 prefectures in Ningxia.We tested for Nm nucleic acid and identified serogroups to determine Nm nucleic acid positive rates and serogroup distributions.Results The overall Nm nucleic acid positivity rate was 3.53％(42/1 190).Positivity rates for 0-6-,7-13-,14-19-,20-39-,and ≥ 40-year-olds were 3.91％,4.42％,5.21％,0.48％,and 3.70％,respectively,ranging from 0.36％to 9.72％by prefecture.Among 42 Nm strains,serogroup B,C,Y,and W135 accounted for 4.76％(2 strains),35.71％(15 strains),4.76％(2 strains),and 54.76％(23 strains).Conclusions Nm carriage was low among a healthy population in Ningxia,but with higher carriage in secondary school students.The predominant Nm serogroups were W135 and C.We suggest strengthening meningococcal vaccination in age-eligible populations and optimizing immunization strategies for meningococcal disease.
