Status and prospects for vaccination of pregnant women
Illnesses during pregnancy,such as COVID-19 or influenza,can lead to severe disease,complications,and adverse pregnancy outcomes in pregnant women.Most infant vaccinations start no earlier than 6 weeks after birth,and therefore infants may have an immunity gap period with an increased risk of disease prior to vaccination.Maternal vaccinations may effectively protect pregnant women,fetuses,and infants from vaccine-preventable diseases.In this article,we summarize the safety and effectiveness of vaccines widely recommended for pregnant women,burdens of vac cine-targeted diseases,and the status of maternal vaccination in some countries including China.We discuss challenges in vaccine clinical trials and vaccination of pregnant women and provide prospects for maternal vaccination in China.
