Descriptive epidemiology and interrupted time series analyses of mumps in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region,2004-2023
Objective To describe the epidemiological characteristics and trends in incidence of mumps under different vaccination strategies in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Methods We obtained data on mumps cases reported during 2004-2023 to the China Disease Control and Prevention Information System and conducted descriptive epidemiological analyses. We used interruption time series analysis to evaluate trends in mumps incidence prior to introduction of mumps vaccine into the Expanded Program on Immunization(EPI)(January 2004 to June 2008),during the one mumps vaccine dose period(July 2008 to May 2020),and during the two-dose period(June 2020 to December 2023).Results The average annual reported incidence of mumps during 2004-2023 in Ningxia was 40.82 per 100 000 population(54 455 cases),with incidences of 77.57,192.37,84.84,and 4.26 for 0-4-,5-9-,10-14-,and≥15-year-olds,and 44.26,46.31,and 15.49 for the three mumps vaccination policy periods.Interrupted time series analysis showed that the average monthly incidence of mumps per 100 000 total population increased by 0.063(t=2.83,P=0.005)during the non-EPI period, decreased by 0.116(t=-5.06,P<0.001)per month during the one-dose vaccination period, and decreased by 0.079(t=-2.08,P=0.039)per month during the two-dose vaccination period. Conclusions The incidence of mumps decreased from 2004 to 2023 among the whole population and all age groups of Ningxia, with the highest incidence among children 5-9 years of age.The two-dose mumps vaccination schedule further reduced the incidence and sustained the reduction.
