Analysis of the relationship between tobacco exposure and BMI among adults in Tianjin City
Objective To analyze the relationship between tobacco exposure and BMI among adults in Tianjin City. Methods A total of 1828 adults who participated in China Adult Chronic Disease and Nutrition Surveillance Survey and had complete information of demographic characteristics, smoking status, physical measurements and dietary intake were selected as the study subjects. The relationship between tobacco exposure and BMI was analyzed by logistic regres-sion.Results A total of 1828 subjects(858 males and 970 females)were included, with an average age of(53.94±14.67)years old.The logistic regression analysis of smoking status and BMI showed that age(OR=1.011,P=0.004),married(OR=1.590,P=0.005),low education level(primary school and below:OR=1.828,P=0.005,junior high school:OR=596,P=0.005)were risk factors for overweight and obesity, while smoking status was not significantly associated with overweight and obesity. The logistic regression analysis of second-hand smoke exposure and BMI showed that second-hand smoke exposure(OR=1.347,P=0.009),age(OR=1.012,P=0.002),town(OR=1.281,P=0.036),married(OR=1.609,P=0.005),low education level(primary school and below:OR=1.824,P=0.006,junior high school:OR=1.542,P=0.010)were risk factors for overweight and obesity. Conclusion This study did not find the relationship between smoking and BMI.Secondhand smoke exposure is a risk factor for overweight and obesity.
