Development of maternal and infant health literacy scale and its reliability and validity analysis
Objective To establish maternal and infant health literacy scale and provide an evaluation tool for ac-cessing maternal and infant health literacy. Methods Through systematic literature reviews, interviews with experts and Delphi expert consultations,a scale was developed and then modified by preliminary investigation. The reliability and validity of the scale was examined through investigating maternal and infant health literacy among 350 pregnant woman and infant of mothers treated in Chongqing Health Center for Women and Children. Results The initial item pool contained 64 items, which included three dimensions of basic knowledge and ideas, healthy lifestyle and behavior, and basic skills.Critical ratio method, correlation coefficient method and internal consistency analysis were used to analyze the items and ultimately the scale contained 55 items to evaluate maternal and child health literacy. The Cronbach's α of general scale was 0.865.Its re-test reliability was 0.797,and the split-half reliability was 0.826.The results of confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that the fitting was good for each part of the theoretical framework model(for basic knowledge and ideas:x2/df=1.869,root mean square error of approximation[RMSEA]=0.050,goodness of fit index[GFI]=0.854,adjusted goodness of fit index[AGFI]=0.824;for healthy lifestyle and behavior:x2/df=1.968,RMSEA=0.053,GFI=0.938,AGF=0.916;and for basic skills:x2/df=1.555,RMSEA=0.040,GFI=0.974,AGF=0.956).Conclusion The maternal and infant health literacy scale designed in this study demonstrates good reliability and validity.
