Development of the grandparents'parenting stress and benefits questionnaire and its reliability and validity test
Objective To develop grandparents'parenting stress and benefits questionnaire for Chinese grandparents-parents co-parenting families,and to provide a tool for research on physical and mental health among elderly adults involved in intergenerational parenting.Methods Literature review,qualitative interviews,and expert consultations were used to form the initial pool of questionnaire items.A multistage whole-group sample of 1032 elderly adults with intergenerational parenting was selected in Shandong Province.A total of 451 samples were used for item analysis and exploratory factor analysis.A total of 581 samples were used for validation factor analysis and internal consistency reliability test.The depression scale for elderly adults was used to test the validity of the calibration association.Results The 24-item questionnaire consisted of five factors:somatic health stress,parenting benefits,parenting conflict,socioeconomic stress,and lack of parenting knowledge,which together explained 65.060%of the total variance.The validation factor analysis results showed that x2/df=2.350,IFI=0.931,CFI=0.933,TLI=0.924,RMSEA=0.062.The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the questionnaire was 0.912,and the Cronbach's alpha coefficients of each dimension ranged from 0.812 to 0.920.Conclusion The reliability of the grandparents'parenting stress and benefits questionnaire for grandparents-parents co-parenting families meets psychomet-ric requirements and could be used in studies related to physical and mental health of grandparents in grandparents-parents co-parenting families in China.
