The multiple mediating effects of interpersonal trust and social anxiety between bullying victimization and loneliness
Objective To investigate the mediating role of interpersonal trust and social anxiety between bullying victimization and loneliness. Methods A survey was conducted on 460 high school students using the Delaware Bullying Victimization Scale,UCLA Loneliness Scale,Interpersonal Trust Scale, and Children's Social Anxiety Scale. Results Bull-ying victimization was significantly associated with loneliness(β=0.23,P<0.001).Interpersonal trust, social anxiety and loneliness were significantly correlated(β=-0.27,-0.39,0.56;all P<0.001).The fitting indexes of the un-derlying variable structural equation model were x2/df=3.17,RMSEA=0.07,SRMR=0.05,CFI=0.95,TLI=0.93.The results of the mediation effect test showed a significant mediating path between bullying victimization and loneli-ness:bullying victimization → interpersonal trust → social anxiety → loneliness(mediation effect size 0.03),95%confi-dence intervals did not include 0.Conclusion Bullying victimization among middle school students not only directly predicts loneliness, but also indirectly predicts loneliness through interpersonal trust and social anxiety. These results provide practi-cal insights for preventing and intervening in loneliness among middle school students.
