Objective To conduct a text analysis on health education syllabi from abroad higher education institu-tions,and to improve domestic health education syllabus and course design.Methods Complete syllabi of health education and promotion courses were retrieved by Bing and Google search engines.Text analysis and content summary were conducted by NVivo software(Release 1.7.1)following an open-coding scheme.Results A total of 14 syllabi showed flexible text-book selections.But the core course contents were similar,which consisted of three main parts:basic concepts of health ed-ucation and promotion,health behavior theories,program planning or setting-based interventions.Courses from the health promotion degree programs also introduced health ethics,personal philosophies,and code of ethics for health education pro-fessionals.All syllabi had course objectives in the same format using verbs from the Bloom's taxonomy.Most syllabi applied formative procedural assessments on students'learning performances,and provided additional supporting information of course policies,requirements,and instructions.Conclusion A learner-based syllabus following the international standards would improve the teaching quality of health education courses and promote trainings of health education professionals.
