Analysis of sugar content in four categories of pre-packaged foods in China
Objective To analyse the sugar contents of four categories of pre-packaged foods included dairy products,confectionary,bakery products and non-alcoholic beverages,and to provide suggestions on healthy snack selection for the pub-lic.Methods The dataset subtracted from FoodSwitch(2017 to 2020)were used to analyse sugar content at low(green),me-dium(yellow),and high(red)levels according to the UK's traffic light standards.The sugar content of each kind of food and its relative ratio to recommended daily amounts were also presented.Chi-square test was used to explore the differences of sugar content among different food groups.Sugar content was described by the median and quartile.Results There were 4872 kinds of pre-packaged foods being analysed,with a median of 9.5 g/100 g sugar in total.Confectionary contained sugar 43.0 g/100 g,while bakery products contained sugar 16.1 g/100 g in average.68.2%of confectionary were at red light lev-el.Among the subgroups of food,ice cream(82.7%)and candy(71.6%)were at the highest red level of traffic lights.One portion of non-alcoholic beverages contained the highest sugar(18.0 g),accounting for 36.0%of recommended daily amounts.Conclusion There are significant differences in sugar content among the four categories of pre-packaged foods,and the percentage of confectionary with red light is the highest while non-alcoholic beverages contain the highest sug-ar per package.Scientific guidance on selecting pre-packaged foods wisely is needed for controlling high sugar consumption and related health risks.
