Effectiveness of theory-based interventions on physical activities increase among children and adolescents:a meta-analysis
Objective To explore the effect of theory-based interventions on increasing physical activities among children and adolescents. Methods Relevant literatures were systematically searched from Chinese and English databases with a time span from database establishment to May 1,2024.Two trained researchers independently screened the literatures and evaluated for quality.A random effects model was applied for meta-analysis,and qualitative synthesized analysis was fi-nally conducted for the application of behavior theories and behavior change techniques. Results A total of 45 randomized controlled trials were ultimately included, and meta-analysis on 16 studies showed no statistically significant changes in physical activities in children and adolescents in the intervention group compared to the control group(SMD=0.18,95%CI:-0.22-0.59,P>0.05).No statistically significant change in moderate to vigorous physical activities(SMD=0.29,95%CI:-0.38-0.96,P>0.05)and no statistically significant change in step counts(SMD=-0.03,95%CI:-0.27-0.21,P>0.05).Conclusion Meta-analysis results of the existed literatures is not enough to conclude that theory-based interventions are effective in increasing physical activities among children and adolescents, and further research is still needed to understand the association between intervention effectiveness and specific intervention components.
