Effect of peer education on hepatitis B and AIDS health education among college students
Objective To explore effective health education model for the prevention and control on key infectious diseases and improvement of the knowledge and skills of hepatitis B and AIDS prevention and control among university students. Methods Health education and work training programs were carried out in two specific universities.A volunteers team in each university implemented a two-week peer education.Electronic questionnaire was used to determine knowledge and awareness level and evaluate the effect of peer education on hepatitis B and AIDS among university students. Results After peer education, the accuracy rates of"having sex with hepatitis B carriers could infect hepatitis B"and"having sex using condoms could prevent hepatitis B"increased significantly, from 70.26%to 85.20%and 77.41%to 89.65%respectively(P<0.05).Although the accuracy rates of"mosquito bites or sharing bathtubs and swimming pools with infected persons could not infect AIDS"improved statistically significantly(P<0.05),they still remained at low level,60.99%and 66.43%respectively.After the activity,89.24%of the students were willing to actively engage in hepatitis B and AIDS pre-vention and control volunteer activities(P<0.05).Conclusion Recruiting volunteers to carry out peer education is con-ducive to the prevention and control of hepatitis B,AIDS and other infectious diseases in universities, which needs to be continuously promoted later.
