Readability evaluation of online health information related to diabetes in China
Objective To evaluate the readability of online health information related to diabetes in Chinese,and to provide references for recommending,revising or developing highly readable online health information about diabetes.Methods In November 2021,a retrieval strategy was developed to screen online health information about diabetes from three major search engines including Baidu,360 and Sogou.Eight experts evaluated the readability of health information by using the"Online Health Information Readability Evaluation Tool".R4.1 statistical software was used to calculate Fleiss'Kappa coefficient to evaluate inter-rater reliability,and Microsoft Excel 2016 was used to calculate the scores.Results A total of 74 Web pages were evaluated.The readability score ranged from 0.25 to 0.72 points,with an average of(0.49±0.16)points,among which 15(20.27%)of the web pages had total score greater than 0.70.There was no statistical sig-nificance in the readability level of different search engines and different websites(P>0.05).Conclusion The readability of online health information about diabetes is poor.Online health information producer could take improvement measures such as introducing behaviors step-by-step,providing behavioral implementation tools,using comic or question-and-answer style,focusing on summary and interaction with readers.If necessary,visual emphasis,visual aids and other strategies are recom-mended to increase the readability of online health information about diabetes.
