Insect mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) has been extensively used in phylogeny, molecular evolution, population genetics and phylogeographics.Hemiptera is the biggest order among Exopterygota and has important economic significance. To date, mitogenomes from 100 hemipterans have been sequenced,of which 81 were sequenced in China. In this study,we reviewed the current results of hemipteran mitogenomes, provided a comparative analysis for general features of hemipteran mitogenomes (including genome size, gene content, gene rearrangement, base composition, codon usage, evolutionary patterns of protein-coding genes,RNA genes and non-coding regions),and summarized the research status of hemipteran systematic evolution based mitogenomic data. Finally,we discussed some problems in mitogenome sequencing, sequence annotation and application in phylogenetic analysis, and prospected the research focuses of hemipteran mitogenomics in the future.
