Ovarian reserve refers to the quantity of primordial follicles and the quality of oocytes residing in the ovary, indicating female fertility. The depletion of ovarian reserve is the primary cause of fertility decline.Under physiological conditions, the cyclical recruitment of primordial follicles and the decline in oocyte quality gradually decrease the ovarian reserve until menopause.Under pathological conditions, premature depletion of ovarian reserve leads to early cessation of ovulation, estrogen deficiency, and increased risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, the ovarian reserve is crucial for female health. As the average age of childbearing increases and awareness of fertility preservation grows, there is a growing social demand for protecting female fertility. Thus, discussing the methods of fertility preservation related to the ovarian reserve is vital. Here,we review the dynamics of ovarian reserve, the diseases caused by declining ovarian reserve, the mechanisms of ovarian reserve depletion, and the relevant fertility preservation methods.
