A qualitative study of low seniority nurses'feelings and experiences of death in hospice care
Objective To understand the real-life experience feelings and problems encountered by junior nurses about patients who die in hospice care, and to provide a basis for the development of strategies for death education for junior nurses. Methods Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with ten junior nurses using purposive sampling method with qualitative research method, and Colaizzi data analysis method was used to analyze the data and refine the themes. Results Five themes and eleven sub-themes were distilled,i.e.,treating the seriousness of the nursing profession(professional identity, understanding, and respect),hos-pice-related nursing skills(insufficient operation technology, inadequate hospice exposure, and spiritual care),rendering of negative emotions(anxiety, powerlessness, and exhaustion, and empathy),lack of a family and social support system(family support, social support),and perceiving the value of life and promoting growth. Conclusion LVNs improve their professional skills and empathic experiences in hospice unit practice, emphasize the inner experiences and needs of LVNs facing hospice care, and coping strategies for problematic experiences faced therein should be explored to promote nurses'development toward positive experiences.
