Clinical Efficacy and Safety of Photodynamic Therapy Combined with Microdroplet Technique with Botulinum Toxin Type A in the Treatment of Papular-pustular Rosacea
Objective To explore the clinical efficacy and safety of photodynamic therapy combined with microdroplet technique using botulinum toxin type A in the treatment of papular-pustular rosacea. Methods Patients with papular-pustular rosacea who received photodynamic therapy and microdroplet technique with botulinum toxin type A at the author's hospital from March 2021 to December 2022 were selected. After inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied,68 patients who met the criteria were retrospectively enrolled and assigned into two groups according to a random lottery method. The control group(n=30)received photodynamic therapy, while the observation group(n=38)received the addition of microdroplet technique with botulinum toxin type A one week after photodynamic therapy. The scores of papules/pustules,centrofacial erythema, flushing, telangiectasia, and quality of life of the two groups were observed and compared at 4 weeks after the end of treatment. The changes in clinical symptom scores, clinical efficacy, and adverse reactions of the two groups were analyzed, and the recurrence rates at 12 weeks after treatment were compared. Results The scores of papules/pustules,centrofacial erythema, flushing, and telangiectasia showed no statistical difference between the two groups before treatment(P>0.05).At 4 weeks after treatment,a notable reduction in papules/pustules scores was observed in both groups compared to baseline data, but no statistical difference was found between the two groups in terms of the papules/pustules scores(P>0.05).However,the scores of centrofacial erythema and flushing in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group(P<0.05).The total efficacy rate was 92.10% (34/38)in the observation group, which was higher than 66.67% (20/30)in the control group, with a statistical difference(P<0.05).After 12 weeks of follow-up,the recurrence rate in the observation group was lower than that in the control group, but there was no significant difference between the two groups(P>0.05).Conclusion Photodynamic therapy has a good effect on rosacea papules and pustules.Combined with botulinum toxin type A facial microdroplet injection,it can better reduce the symptoms of erythema and flushing and improve the quality of life of patients.
