Propionibacterium acnes(P.acnes)is a skin commensal bacterium,and it is the most abundant bacterium living in the sebaceous glands of hair follicles.P.acnes has been associated with the acne,making it"notorious".However,with the development of genomics,proteomics and metabolomics,more and more attention has been paid to the interaction between P.acnes and skin health.Actually,P.acnes plays an important role in maintaining skin health under normal physiology.This review summarized the relationship between P.acnes and skin health from the aspects of discovery history,biological characteristics and maintenance on skin health.
