The Correlation Study on Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.)Fiber Quality and Yield and Planting Density
Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) yield and quality are mainly affected by planting density.A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of planting density on kenaf yield and fiber quality in Xinyang,Henan. Results showed that the fiber strength improved with planting density varying from 150,000 to 270,000 plants per hectare. The linear equation was y =233.75 + 12.85 x and the correlation was significant.Kenaf fiber fineness increased and fiber quality improved as the planting density increases. The linear equation was y =185.44 + 9.3 x and the correlation reached extremely significant.Kenaf growth was negatively affected by higher planting density, resulting in the decrease in plant height, stem diameter and bark thickness. The fiber yield decreased as a result of too high or too low planting density.Higher yields and better quality occurred in the planting density of 180,000-210,000 plants per hectare.
