Effects of TCM ice swab pharyngeal stimulation combined with neuromuscular electrical stimulation in treatment of patients with dysphagia after stroke
Objective:To explore effects of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)ice swab pharyngeal stimulation combined with neuromuscular electrical stimulation in treatment of patients with dysphagia after stroke. Methods:A prospective study was conducted on 100 patients with dysphagia after stroke admitted to this hospital from January 2021 to January 2023.According to the random number table method, they were divided into study group and control group,50 cases in each group. The control group was treated with neuromuscular electrical stimulation, while the study group was treated with TCM ice swab pharyngeal stimulation on the basis of that of the control group. The clinical efficacy, the swallowing function[Kubota water swallow test(WST),swallowing quality of life scale(SWAL-QOL)]score,the hyoid-laryngeal complex mobility(the distance of hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage forward and upward movement during swallowing),the nutritional indicators[hemoglobin(Hb),albumin(ALB),prealbumin(PA)]levels before and after the treatment, and the incidence of adverse events were compared between the two groups. Results:The total effective rate of the study group was 94.00%(47/50),which was higher than 80.00%(40/50)of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).After the treatment, the WST score of the study group was lower than that of the control group;the SWAL-QOL score was higher than that of the control group;the forward and upward movement of hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage were greater than those in the control group;and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).After the treatment, the levels of Hb,PA and ALB in the two groups were higher than those before the treatment, those in the study group were higher than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).Further,the incidence of adverse events in the study group was 4.00%(2/50),which was lower than 16.00%(8/50)in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusions:TCM ice swab pharyngeal stimulation combined with neuromuscular electrical stimulation can improve the mobility of hyoid-laryngeal complex, promote the recovery of swallowing function, improve the nutritional status and reduce the incidence of adverse events in the patients with dysphagia after stroke. Moreover,it is superior to single neuromuscular electrical stimulation treatment.
