Comparison of effects of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty in treatment of elderly patients with knee degenerative osteoarthritis
Objective:To compare effects of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty in treatment of elderly patients with knee degenerative osteoarthritis. Methods:The clinical data of 88 elderly patients with knee degenerative osteoarthritis admitted to this hospital from January 2022 to January 2023 were retrospectively analyzed.According to different treatment methods, they were divided into control group(n=38)and observation group(n=50).The control group was treated with total knee arthroplasty, while the observation group was treated with unicompartmental knee arthroplasty. The operation time, the intraoperative blood loss, the knee function[Hospital for Special Surgery(HSS)knee score],the pain degree[visual analogue scale(VAS)]score, the quality of life[general quality of life inventory-74(GQOLI-74)]score before and after the treatment, and the incidence of complications were compared between the two groups. Results:The operation time of the observation group was shorter than that of the control group, the intraoperative blood loss was less than that of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).After the treatment, the HSS scores of joint mobility, pain, joint function, muscle strength, flexion deformity and joint stability in the two groups were higher than those before the treatment, those in the observation group were higher than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).The VAS scores of the two groups were lower than those before the treatment, that in the observation group was lower than that in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).The GQOLI-74 scores of material life, physical function, psychological function and social function in the two groups were higher than those before the treatment, those in the observation group were higher than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).However,there was no significant difference in the incidence of complications between the two groups(P>0.05).Conclusions:Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty in the elderly patients with degenerative osteoarthritis of the knee can shorten the operation time, reduce the intraoperative blood loss, improve the knee function, reduce the pain and improve the quality of life. Moreover,it is superior to total knee arthroplasty.
