Correlations among serum free carnitine, insulin sensitivity levels and extrauterine growth retardation in premature infants
Objective:To analyze correlations among blood free carnitine, insulin sensitivity levels and extrauterine growth retardation(EUGR)in premature infants. Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted on 121 premature infants admitted to the hospital from May 2022 to May 2023.According to the occurrence of EUGR,they were divided into EUGR group(n=48)and non-EUGR group(n=73).Another 50 healthy full-term infants were selected as the control group. The levels of serum blood free carnitine and insulin sensitivity[homeostasis model insulin resistance index(HOMA-IR)]were compared among the three groups 3 days after birth and at the corrected gestational age of 40 weeks.Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlations among blood free carnitine,HOMA-IR levels with EUGR in the premature infants. Results:Three days after birth, the levels of blood free carnitine in the EUGR group and the non-EUGR group were lower than those in the control group(P<0.05),and there were no significant differences between the EUGR group and the non-EUGR group(P>0.05).At the corrected gestational age of 40 weeks, the blood free carnitine level in the EUGR group were lower than those in the control group and the non-EUGR group(P<0.05),and there was no significant difference between the non-EUGR group and the control group(P<0.05).Three days after birth and at 40 weeks of corrected gestational age,the HOMA-IR levels in the EUGR group were higher than those in the non-EUGR group and the control group, those in the non-EUGR group were higher than those in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Pearson correlation analysis showed that the blood free carnitine level was negatively correlated with EUGR in the premature infants(r<0,P<0.05),while the HOMA-IR level was positively correlated with EUGR(r>0,P<0.05).Conclusions:The blood free carnitine level is negatively correlated with EUGR in the premature infants, while the HOMA-IR level is positively correlated with EUGR.
