Effects of tongue muscle function training combined with fixed orthodontic appliance in treatment of children with early odontogenic malocclusion deformity
Objective:To observe effects of tongue muscle function training combined with fixed orthodontic appliance in treatment of children with early odontogenic malocclusion deformity. Methods:A prospective study was conducted on 66 children with early odontogenic malocclusion admitted to the hospital from February 2020 to February 2023.According to the random number table method, they were divided into control group and observation group,33 cases in each group. The control group was treated with fixed orthodontic appliance, while the observation group was treated with tongue muscle function training on the basis of that of the control group. Both groups were treated for 6 months. The clinical efficacy, the masticatory muscle EMG indexes(masseter muscle, temporal muscle, digastricus recruitment potential)levels, the chewing function[Karaduman chewing performance scale(KCPS)]score, and the periodontal indexes(plaque index, debris index)levels were compared between the two groups before and after the treatment. Results:The total effective rate of the observation group was 90.91%(30/33),which was higher than 69.70%(23/33)of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).After the treatment, the recruitment potential of masseter muscle, temporal muscle and digastric muscle in the observation group were higher than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).After the treatment, the KCPS score of the observation group was lower than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Further,after the treatment, the plaque index and debris index in the observation group were lower than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusions:Tongue muscle function training combined with fixed orthodontic appliance in the treatment of the children with early odontogenic malocclusion can improve the total effective rate of treatment and the levels of masticatory muscle electromyographic indexes, and reduce the levels of masticatory function score and periodontal index. Moreover,it is superior to single e fixed orthodontic appliance treatment.
