Comparison of application effects of Povidone-iodine gargle and mouthwash and compound Chlorhexidine gargle combined with periodental non-surgical treatment in patients with chronic periodontitis
Objective:To compare application effects of Povidone-iodine gargle and mouthwash and compound Chlorhexidine gargle combined with periodental non-surgical treatment in patients with chronic periodontitis.Methods:A prospective study was conducted on 102 patients with chronic periodontitis admitted to this hospital from June 2022 to December 2023.According to the random number table method,they were divided into observation group and control group,51 cases in each group.Both groups underwent periodental non-surgical treatment.On this basis,the control group was treated with compound Chlorhexidine gargle,while the observation group was treated with Povidone-iodine gargle and mouthwash.The clinical efficacy,the periodontal indexes[probing depth(PD),clinical attachment loss(CAL),sulcus bleeding index(SBI),plaque index(PLI)]levels,the gingival crevicular fluid inflammatory factors[interleukin(IL)-6,IL-8,tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)]levels,the oxidative stress indexes[superoxide dismutase(SOD),malondialdehyde(MDA),reactive oxygen species(ROS),glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px)]levels before and after the treatment,and the incidence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups.Results:The total effective rate of the observation group was 96.08%(49/51),which was higher than 80.39%(41/51)of the control group,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).After the treatment,the PD and CAL,and the scores of SBI and PLI in the observation group were lower than those in the control group,and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).After the treatment,the levels of IL-6,IL-8 and TNF-α in gingival crevicular fluid of the observation group were lower than those of the control group,and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).After the treatment,the levels of SOD and GSH-Px in gingival crevicular fluid of the observation group were higher than those of the control group,the levels of MDA and ROS were lower than those of the control group,and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).However,there was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups(P>0.05).Conclusions:Povidone-iodine gargle and mouthwash combined with periodental non-surgical treatment in the patients with chronic periodontitis can improve the total effective rate of treatment,reduce the levels of periodontal indexes and inflammatory factors in the gingival crevicular fluid,and improve the levels of oxidative stress index in the gingival crevicular fluid.Moreover,it is superior to compound Chlorhexidine gargle combined with periodental non-surgical treatment.
