Effects of local injection of nerve growth factor combined with root canal filling in treatment of elderly patients with chronic pulpitis
Objective:To observe effects of local injection of nerve growth factor(NGF)combined with root canal filling in treatment of elderly patients with chronic pulpitis. Methods:A prospective study was conducted on 98 elderly patients with chronic pulpitis admitted to this hospital from July 2020 to June 2023.According to the random number table method, they were divided into study group and control group,49 cases in each group. The control group was treated with root canal filling, while the study group was treated with NGF local injection on the basis of that of the control group. The clinical efficacy, the periodontal indexes[gingival index(GI),periodontal probing depth(PD),plaque index(PLI)]levels, the inflammatory indexes[C-reactive protein(CRP),procalcitonin(PCT),white blood cell count(WBC)]levels, the oral health quality of life[oral health impact profile(OHIP-14)]score,and the incidence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups before and after the treatment. Results:The total effective rate of the study group was 87.76%(43/49),which was higher than 69.39%(34/49)of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).After the treatment, the levels of PD,CRP,PCT,and WBC,and scores of GI,PLI and OHIP-14 in the study group were lower than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).However,there was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups(P>0.05).Conclusions:NGF local injection combined with root canal filling in the treatment of the elderly patients with chronic pulpitis can improve the total effective rate of treatment and reduce the periodontal index and inflammatory index levels and the oral health quality of life scores. Moreover,it is superior to simple root canal filling treatment.
