Correlations among T cell subsets and airway fibrosis index levels and severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Objective:To analyze correlations among T cell subsets and airway fibrosis index levels and severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted on 160 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease admitted to the hospital from June 2022 to December 2023. Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) classification was used to evaluate the severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease[(classification Ⅰ (mild),classification Ⅱ(moderate),classification Ⅲ(severe),classification Ⅳ (extremely severe)]. Another 40 healthy subjects in the same period were selected as the control group. The levels of T cell subsets (CD3+,CD4+/CD8+,CD4+) and airway fibrosis indexes[transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β),matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9),matrix metalloproteinase-12 (MMP-12)]were compared between the two groups and among the patients with different disease severities. Pearson correlation was used to analyze the correlations among T cell subsets, airway fibrosis indexes and the GOLD classification in the patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Results:The levels of CD3+,CD4+/CD8+and CD4+in the study group were lower than those in the control group, the levels of TGF-β,MMP-9 and MMP-12 were higher than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The comparison of CD3+,CD4+/CD8+,CD4+levels among the patients with different disease severities showed that:classification Ⅰ>classification Ⅱ>classification Ⅲ>classification Ⅳ;the comparison of the levels of TGF-β,MMP-9 and MMP-12 among the patients with different disease severities showed that:classification Ⅰ<classification Ⅱ<classification Ⅲ<classification Ⅳ;and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Pearson correlation analysis showed that the levels of CD3+,CD4+/CD8+and CD4+were negatively correlated with the GOLD classification (r<0,P<0.05),while the levels of TGF-β,MMP-9 and MMP-12 were positively correlated with the GOLD classification (r>0,P<0.05). Conclusions:The levels of T cell subsets are negatively correlated with the GOLD classification, and the level of airway fibrosis is positively correlated with the GOLD classification.
