Association of sleep quality with social support among older people of Hani ethnic minority in Mojiang County
Objective To analyze the association of sleep quality with social support among older people of Hani ethnic minority in Mojiang County.Methods The multistage stratified random sampling method was used to conduct a questionnaire survey among 1 402 rural Hani ethnic minority residents aged 60 years and over from Mojiang County of Yunnan Province.Results Among the study population,the prevalence of sleep disorder was 42.2%,with females significantly higher than males(49.8%vs 33.9%,x2=36.354,P<0.001).The preva-lence of sleep disorder increased with age(x2trend=29.402,P<0.001).The lower the educational level,the higher the sleep disorder(x2=3.914,P<0.05).The total social support score was(39.59±6.39),and the scores of objective support,subjective support and social support utilization were(9.52±2.18),(21.86±3.42)and(8.20±2.24),respectively.The scores of total social support,objective support and subjective support of males were higher than females(t=6.362,t=8.399,and t=7.290,P<0.001),and population with good ac-cess to medical services was higher than those with poor access to medical services(t=-2.627,t=-3.400,and t=-3.013,respectively;P<0.05).Population with education of primary school and above(t=-8.052,t=-9.864,t=-2.408,and t=-8.864,respectively;P<0.05)and higher annual per capita household in-come(t=-5.372,t=-3.300,t=-7.479,and t=-6.221,respectively;P<0.05)had higher scores of total social support,objective support,subjective support and social support utilization than their counterparts.The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that total social support score(OR=0.972,95%CI=0.955~0.990)and subjective support score(OR=0.932,95%CI=0.892~0.974)were the protective factors of sleep disorder,that is,the higher social support,the better sleep quality.Conclusions The prevalence of sleep disorder is high among the rural older people of Hani ethnic minority in Mojiang County of Yunnan Prov-ince.Strengthening social support intervention is helpful to improve sleep quality among older people of ethnic mi-norities.
