Effects of online and offline social participation on the health of the rural elderly
Objective To explore the impact and mechanisms of online and offline social participation on the health of rural elderly.Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted from November 2022 to January 2023 using a structured questionnaire designed specifically for rural residents aged 55 and over in Bijie City,Guizhou Province.Results The sample comprised 320 rural elderly with a gender ratio of approximately 1:1,and the majority being between 60 and 64 years of age.Mediation analysis indicated that online social participation was a mediating factor in the association between offline social participation and physical health,mental health,and social adaptability,with indirect effects of 0.436,0.328,and 0.350,respectively.Conclusions There are variations in health status among the rural elderly based on age,educational level,average monthly income,mari-tal status,the presence of medical insurance,and the number of chronic diseases.The influence of online social participation on physical health is achieved through offline social interactions;it also directly and indirectly affects mental health and social adaptability.It is recommended that relevant departments cultivate an awareness of online social participation among the rural elderly and enhance the rate of offline social participation to improve their health level.
