Qingmei is a new variety bred by National Citrus Repository Nursery,Citrus Research Institute of Southwest University from cross Kiyomi tangor with Oota Ponkan made in 1998.The significant differences of the characteristics between Qingmei and Harumi are mainly in fruit shape,fruit peel thickness,single fruit weight,maturity time,the content of titratable acid,etc.Qingmei is a superior mid-ripen variety with easy-peeling,high content of sugar,and high yielding.The average single fruit weight of Qingmei is 148 g,with oblate fruit shape,a shallow neck,thin peel with orange color and ease to peel.The fruit is superior quality with tender,sweet and juicy flesh.The yield is as high as Kiyomi.In Chongqing and Sichuan,Qingmei ripens from late November to early December,about thirty days earlier than that of Harumi,and the fruits could be left on the trees until mid-January.Regional experiments in Jingyan County of Sichuan Province,and Bishan and Beibei of Chongqing showed characteristics of superior quality,early maturity and high yielding.This vari-ety is suitable for planting as a mid-ripen mandarin for the high demand market of New Year's Day.
