Beni Madona is an excellent early maturing citrus hybrid variety known for its tender flesh. However,it had some im-perfect characteristics such as weak tree vigor, relatively high acidity, and difficult to peel.Shangpin No.2 was a new hybrid va-riety bred by the National Citrus Germplasm Repository in Chongqing in 2014,using Beni Madona as the female parent and Qingpi honey mandarin as the pollen parent.Multi-regional trials conducted in different ecological regions showed that Shangpin No.2 had high and stable yields, and superior quality. The variety exhibited stronger tree vigor compared to both parental lines with single fruit weight of 104-224 g,an oblate fruit shape and thin, easily peeling rind. The fruit flesh was tender, juicy with pleasant aroma, lower acidity and superior quality than those of Beni Madona.Under isolated cultivation conditions, the fruits of Shangpin No.2 were seedless. However, when planted with other pollen-bearing varieties, the fruits had six or more seeds per fruit, and the seeds were polyembryonic.Shangpin No.2 was resistance to canker, brown spot diseases and exhibited higher drought toler-ance than Beni Madona. The fruits reach edibility in late October and exhibit strong on the tree capability, enabling an extended harvesting time from end-October to mid-February.It is recommended to plant this variety in warm regions with an annual average temperature above 17.8℃.Comprehensive orchard management should be implemented to reduce fruit cracking.Shangpin No.2 showed excellent climatic adaptation and performed well in some major citrus production areas in Chongqing,Sichuan, and Yunnan provinces. This early-to-mid season new variety showed a promising potential for commercial development in the future.
