Objective To investigate the semen quality of 3 400 cases of men preparing for pregnancy in a tertiary hospital in Northwest China,and understand the overall situation and changing trends of semen quality in men in Northwest China.Methods A total of 3 400 men preparing for pregnancy who attended the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University for semen quality examination from March 2020 to July 2023 were selected as the research subjects.Their sperm concentration,viability,total number of sperms,and other indexes were examined by computer-assisted sperm automated analysis system(CASA).The subjects were grouped according to year,age,season,and time of abstinence,and their relationships with semen quality were analysed.Results Total of 3 400 men preparing for pregnancy were included in the study.Men with normal semen quality accounted for 45.8％and men with abnormal semen quality accounted for 54.2％.Abnormal parameters in descending order were as follows sperm concentration,total number of sperm,forward motile sperm rate,total sperm viability,and semen volume.The proportion of men in the age group of 27-39 years old who underwent semen quality testing was larger,and the total number of sperm,forward motile sperm rate,and total sperm viability varied significantly between ages.Vitality varied between ages,with a significant decline in each indicator in the group with age≥40;Male semen quality showed a downward trend from year to year.Seasons had obvious effect on semen quality,with a significant decrease in semen quality in the summer months.There was a linkage between the duration of abstinence and semen quality,and performing semen quality tests was preferable within three to seven days of abstinence.Conclusion The main abnormal indicators of semen quality for men in Xinjiang are sperm concentration,total sperm count and forward-moving sperm rate,and age is negatively correlated with each semen parameter,so it is recommended to complete childbearing before the age of 40.
