The connotation of the"brain-gut-testis"axis and its application prospects in male reproductive diseases
The kidney is the innate foundation, storing essence and generating marrow, and is responsible for reproduction. The brain is a sea of marrow, which was transformed by kidney essence, and also nourished by water and grain essence derived from the spleen and stomach. The spleen and stomach are the foundation of postnatal development, mainly responsible for receiving, transporting, and transforming water and grain essence. The functions of the large and small intestine are closely related to them.Male reproductive diseases are increasingly receiving attention.Inspired by the innate and acquired relationship in traditional Chinese medicine, the relationship between the brain and intestines,as well as the relationship between intestines and testes, based on scientific research progress in traditional Chinese medicine,it is believed that the brain, intestines, and testes interact to jointly maintain male reproductive health.So,the"brain-gut-testis"axis of male reproduction is condensed and proposed.Specifically, the brain regulates gastrointestinal and testicular functions through neuroendocrine mechanisms, and the gastrointestinal tract can affect brain and testicular function through gut microbiota, brain gut peptides and other factors, while testicles can affect gastrointestinal and brain function through androgens and other factors. The interaction between brain function, gastrointestinal function, and testicular reproductive function is coordinated physiologically and affects pathologically, jointly maintaining and affecting male reproductive health.
