The logical basis of Liang Shuming's theory of rural reconstruction is his reflection on prob-lems existing in social and personal life.Socialism,Buddhism,and Confucianism were academic resources for his theory.Some of Liang's social activities supplied practical references for the formation of his theory,like teaching in Peking University,running schools in Caozhou and Guangzhou,organizing study groups with teachers and friends in Beijing,promoting township to be organized in Guangdong province,investigat-ing Shanxi province's village organization and so on.While some of his professional experience,like edit-ing Cun Zhi Monthly,assuming duty at Village Organize Institute of Henan,supervising Research Institute of Rural Construction in Shandong,helped his theory to be further reconciled with the practice,it also re-vealed the huge tension between his theory and practice.Accordingly,Liang gained a deeper insight into the relationship between the rural reconstruction movement and both the government and peasants.Even so,Liang Shuming still holds an optimistic understanding of"opening up a new situation in the true spirit of China's old principles".
