Impact of regional innovation ecosystems on carbon emission reduction:a configuration path analysis based on QCA
Building regional innovation ecosystems has become a key strategy for achieving collaborative innovation development and carbon emission reduction at the regional level.Based on resource orchestration theory, using 30 provinces in China as case samples, and employing a summarized fsQCA model, this study explored the synergistic mechanisms by which regional innovation ecosystems drove carbon emission reduction. The results were as follows:① Innovation entities, innovation resources, and the innovation environ-ment could not be considered solely necessary conditions for promoting carbon emission reduction in regional innovation ecosystems.In-stead,organic cooperation among various elements was required;that is,no single element served as a bottleneck for achieving high-lev-el carbon emission reduction effects. This reflected the need to continually stimulate the vitality of innovation entities, invest in innova-tion resources, and optimize the innovation environment to fully leverage the important role of regional innovation ecosystems in carbon emission reduction.② The five configuration paths leading to high-level carbon emission reduction effects in regional innovation eco-systems could be categorized into three types:'resource-environment oriented,' 'mixed type,' and 'environment-subject oriented',this reflected the varying stages of development among Chinese provinces and highlighted the significant differences in their driving mechanisms for carbon emission reduction.③ A lower number of industrial enterprises above the designated size, fewer higher educa-tion institutions and research and development institutions, and a lower intensity of R&D investment were identified as weaknesses con-straining the carbon emission reduction effects of regional innovation ecosystems. This indicated a need to further cultivate innovative entities and strengthen financial support.④ Among the five identified effective configuration paths, the full-time equivalent of R&D personnel, digital financial index, and actual utilization of foreign direct investment only emerged as core conditions, while the number of industrial enterprises above the designated size only emerged as auxiliary conditions. The number of higher education institutions and research and development institutions,as well as the intensity of R&D funding investment, emerged as both core and auxiliary con-ditions.This demonstrates the importance of focusing on core elements and strengthening their integration.
