Efficiency measurement, evolution characteristics and spatial spillover effects of agriculture green development in China from a two-stage perspective
The synergistic development of growth, supply security, carbon reduction, pollution abatement, and green expansion is es-sential for constructing a powerful agricultural nation.Measuring agricultural green development efficiency from both socio-economic production and ecological environment protection perspectives can inform the formulation of high-quality agricultural development strat-egies.This study employed the network DEA model to measure the efficiency and two-stage efficiency of agriculture green development in China and to analyze its basic patterns, dynamic evolution, and spatial differences.Additionally, the study investigated various poten-tial predictors of agricultural green development efficiency and its spatial spillover effects. The results showed that:① There was still room for further improvement in both the efficiency and two-stage efficiency of agriculture green development in China from 2005 to 2021,with agricultural socio-economic output efficiency generally exceeding that of ecologically environmental compensation.② The efficiency and two-stage efficiency of agriculture green development in only five provinces reached the optimal level during the study pe-riod.Among the 30 provinces,Shandong ranked first in the improvement of agricultural green development efficiency, while Guangxi ranked last. The distribution pattern revealed that the eastern region exhibited generally high agricultural green development efficiency, whereas the western region demonstrated lower efficiency levels.Specifically, the overall coordination level in Northeast China was the best, followed by the eastern region, and then the western region and the central region.③ During the study period, the development of the efficiency and two-stage efficiency of agriculture green development in China all showed a fluctuating upward trend but with differ-ing evolutionary states.Inter-provincial disparities in agricultural green development efficiency were reduced, the polarization in socio-economic output efficiency gradually weakened, and a clear polarization persisted in ecological environment compensation efficiency.④ Significant spatial differences existed in the efficiency and two-stage efficiency of agriculture green development, and these differ-ences showed a narrowing trend, mainly due to the narrowing differences among intergroups.⑤ Agricultural green development effi-ciency was affected by a combination of economic, institutional, social, and natural factors.Specifically, the direct effect of regional eco-nomic development was not pronounced, but it exerted a positive spatial spillover effect.Environmental regulation could significantly improve the efficiency of agricultural green development and also show a positive spatial spillover effect.Meanwhile, rural industrial structure and urbanization could contribute to improving agricultural green development efficiency, but their respective spatial spillover effects were all negative. The agricultural disaster rate exerted a certain negative effect on agricultural green development efficiency,al-though no obvious spatial spillover effect was found.
