The Revitalization of Higher Education Promoted Local Economic Growth——A Quasi-experiment from Western Higher Education Revitalization Plan
The pluralistic relationship between higher education and economy provides multiple paths for China's social transformation and educational system reform.Based on the quasi-experiment of the plan for the revitalization of higher education in the central and western China, the panel data of 285 Chinese cities from 2008 to 2019 were used to investigate the causal relationship between the re-vitalization of higher education and local economic growth using the progressive double difference method. This study found that the revitalization plan of higher education in the central and western regions significantly promoted local economic growth, but this economic growth effect only affected the western cities and the first, second, and third tier cities, not the eastern and central cities and the fourth and fifth tier cities. From the perspective of mechanism, technological in-novation effect and industrial structure optimization effect were two important paths for the revitalization of higher education to affect local economic growth. Therefore, the government should orderly improve the breadth and depth of the implementation of the revitalization plan of higher education in the central and western regions, constantly enhance the compatibility between the revitalization plan of colleges and universities in the central and western regions and the current situation of local development, and constantly improve the support system of the re-vitalization plan of higher education in the central and western regions to serve local economic growth,so as to optimize the allocation of higher education re-sources,narrow the gap in economic development, and achieve common prosperity.
