Are Students'Abilities Better Developed at Double First-class Universities?Evidence from Chinese University Graduates
The construction of the double first-class university is a major strategy in China's higher education. However, the question of whether students'abilities are better developedat double first-class universities remains unanswered.Based on data from the 2019 University Graduates'Employment and Entrepreneurship Quality Tracking Survey from Shaanxi Province, this study ex-amined the effect of institution type(double first-class vs.non-double first-class universities)on students'ability development using propensity score matching and the mediating effect of student engagement on this relationship between institution type and ability development using bootstrap estimation. The results demonstrated that students from double first-class universities exhibited significantly better core skills, research capabilities, and self-awareness and globalization abilities than those from non-double first-class universities.Students'research capability devel-opment varied the most between the institution types.Additionally, student en-gagement played an active mediating role in the relationship between institution type and ability development.
