Review on the Valuation of Desert Ecosystem Service Values
Desert ecosystem is a representative ecosystem type in Northwest China, and it has unique structure and functions which are different from those of other ecosystems. It is meaningful to valuate desert ecosystem services for ecological restoration and rebuilding, regional environment protection, and eventually sustainable development in arid lands. This paper classifies desert ecosystem services into six types, i. e. wind break and sand fixation, soil conservation, water resource regulation, carbon fixation and oxygen release, biodiversity conservation, and tourism and culture. Based on the classification, this paper reviews literatures about the valuation of desert ecosystem services, and points out main problems existing in current literatures. Finally, several suggestions for further research are put forward, including enhancing research on valuation of unique services that desert ecosystem provides and on valuation of desert ecosystem services according to specific conditions in small regions, and reasonable selection and adjustment of price coefficients for desert ecosystem service values valuation.
