Research progress on the provenance of aeolian sand and sand belts among the Alxa Deserts:implications for combat desertification in the Great Green Wall
Located in the west of Inner Mongolia, the Alxa Plateau distributed the Badain Jaran Desert, the sec-ond largest in China, and the Tengger Desert, the fourth largest in China. This area is one of the most important sources of dust in the north China, and provide channels for the northwest road of dust storms to Beijing. These two deserts have been included in the Hexi Corridor battle of the new Great Green Wall(GGW).One of the es-sential tasks in this area is the construction of dune-preventing vegetation belts. This paper reviews the important research progress on two major desert provenances and the sand transport belts formed around the Yabrai Moun-tains,in order to provide reference for the GGW.In the future, basic research should be strengthened in studies of source areas and transport mechanism of aeolian sand, the construction of forest and grass on the edge and the degradation mechanism of shelter-forest,and how to take the advantages of wind energy resources in sand belt area,so as to provide scientific and technological support for winning the three battles of the GGW.
