The Metropolitan Museum of Art in the United States has a stunning screen from the Qing dynasty. The screen is made of carved red and black lacquer. It is considered a masterpiece because of the inscription on the top left bears the name of Lu Kuisheng. However, its style does not conform to the known characteristics of Lu's works. This paper examines the inscription on the back of the lacquer screen. It compares it to local records. The findings suggest that the work may have been created during the Kangxi period. It also explains why it was created and shows how officials and gentry in Lingnan interacted in the past.
