The Aesthetics and Spiritual Significance of Ceramic Symbols in the Yaji Tu Tradition——Take the "Eighteen Bachelor" Image as an Example
The Yaji paintings,which originated in the Tang Dynasty and serves as a traditional depiction of literati activities,have evolved over the centuries and gradually become a paradigm and a metaphor for personal ideals.Within these paintings,figures,objects,and scenes collectively contribute to the construction of the schema and form the image form with meaning,with appreciative ceramics,known as"elegant pastime,"being hailed as symbols representing individual character.Building upon the evolution of the"Eighteen Bachelor's Image"in past dynasties,this study employs a combination of historical records and image analysis,integrating structuralist and semiotic research methods.It examines the nature and value of ceramics within the image system,revealing the humanistic spirit inherent in traditional Chinese Yaji patterns,epitomized by Du Jin's"Eighteen Bachelor's Picture Screen."Moreover,it aims to elucidate the symbolic value of ceramic artistry and the aesthetic beauty of artifacts within the development of ancient Chinese pictorial paradigms.
