From Brocade "Purple Flowing Water" to the Ceramics"Falling Flowers and Flowing Water"——A Study on the Decoration of "Falling Flowers and Flowing Water" Pattern Cup in the Ming Dynasty Chenghua Period Doucai Porcelain
This study takes the "falling flowers and flowing water" pattern cup in the Ming Dynasty Chenghua period doucai porcelain as a case study to delve into the interplay between the ceramic daily use functional and visual expression of the "falling flowers and flowing water" imagery within a specific socio-cultural context. It further investigates the law of transformation of the "falling flowers and flowing water" theme from imagery to "material" expression,revealing how the artistry and practicality aspects of ceramics,as well as the conventionalization and innovation,contribute to the imitation and recreation of the core imagery of "falling flowers and flowing water." Through comparative analysis,the study examines the discrepancies in line,form,and color between the doucai porcelain "falling flowers and flowing water" pattern and the brocade "purple flowing water" pattern,exploring the reasons behind the heterogeneous interpretations of the same image theme in different artistic mediums. The research reveals that the "falling flowers and flowing water" pattern in the Ming Dynasty Chenghua period doucai porcelain not only inherited the decorative features of Song dynasty brocade but also integrated contemporary painting techniques,philosophical ideas,and aesthetic consciousness,developing a distinctive decorative pattern characteristic of its era.
