Reflecting on the Construction and Innovation of Institutional Repositories from the Cultural Perspective
The research dissemination is one of the core missions of modern universities, and the institutional repositories, which started around 2000,plays an indispensable role in fulfilling this mission. The focus of the initial construction of the institutional repositories was on collection and open access of the research outputs published formally. With the increasing digitization and diversification of academic research activities, the functions and service methods of institutional repositories are further deepened. The construction of institutional repositories is an important project in the transformation of university and research libraries, which is not only conducive to transformation and development, but also opens up a new world for the upgrading and innovation of library services. The practice of library transformation in the past two decades shows that the construction of institutional repositories is not only a technical or professional issue, but also closely related to values, service methods, and cooperation with users. While the institutional repositories continue to deepen and innovate, they also bring a series of new challenges to institutional management and culture. To do this,we need to think culturally, embrace and address development issues. From the perspective of a university/research library, this paper discusses the challenges and opportunities in the development of institutional repositories from three aspects:1)go out of the library, and find new needs in communication with users;2)broaden new channels and realize vertical integration of library resources;3)embrace the new era and fulfill the new mission with the goal of global sharing. This paper puts forward three suggestions for the next round of development of institutional repositories.1)Focus on comprehensive participation. The construction of the institutional repositories of university requires the storage of all academic achievements of the institution, which not only requires the faculties and staffs to display their academic achievements but also ensures the participation of all.2)Strengthen collective cooperation and sharing."Next generation repositories"must change the phenomenon of digital island, based on the goal of global sharing, and make every institutional repository as much as possible to improve the visibility of open sharing.3)Deepen high-quality services. The vitality of institutional repository depends on its social relevance and external expansion. In a highly digitalized era,the construction of institutional repository should actively integrate into the digital system of its parent institution.27 refs.
