The Weakening Characteristics of Rural Public Reading Space and Its Optimization:A Field Survey of 27 Administrative Villages in 3 Provinces in Central China
In the process of promoting the rural revitalization strategy, the traditional rural reading service system has encountered dilemmas such as idling, inefficient operation and low participation. It is urgent to explore a new path for the transformation of rural reading service. Therefore, the construction of rural public reading space is an important exploration.Reading space is a hot spot in the field of library science. However, the study of rural public reading space has just started.Due to the specificity and complexity of the environment and people in rural areas, research should not only refer to existing theory of reading space but also take a perspective of supply and demand synergy as a whole. Therefore, through a grounded research based on the interview data from reading space managers and peasants in 27 administrative villages in Henan,Hubei and Hunan provinces, this paper establishes a three-dimensional theoretical framework including space production, space participation and space acquisition to analyze the development characteristics of rural public reading space. The results show that the rural public reading space is weakening. In the dimension of space production, the physical resources are basically complete, while the system and cultural production are relatively weak.In the dimension of space participation, the participation ability, intention and practice of villagers are all at a lower level. In the dimension of space acquisition,it shows the defective functional experience, superficial value acquisition and weak reading identity. These characteristics are derived from the mismatching between the administrative logic and grassroots cultural demands, the impact of technological changes on the existence of rural public reading space, the dislocation of reading service supply caused by rural population change, and the shortage of endogenous reading needs due to insufficient accumulation of cultural capital among villagers.Consequently,it's necessary to 1)adjust the spatial production logic on demand basis,2)realize function compound and layout network under the goal of utility extension,3)construct a built-in space structure on the basis of local resources,4)build the virtual reading space following the update of digital technology, and 5)promote the cultural capital accumulation of villagers to stimulate their internal reading demands. The three-dimension theoretical framework builds a new perspective to explore rural public reading space and can be extended to other relevant studies. Also, the analysis of characteristics, reasons and countermeasures proposed in this paper also have theoretical and practical significance for the optimization of rural reading space.3 tabs.43 refs.
