6I Learning Center for the Future:Digital Intelligence Empowerment for Teaching and Research Services in University Libraries
At the end of 2021,the Ministry of Education proposed a pilot initiative to construct a series of learning centers for the future based on university libraries.Since then,the idea of constructing learning center for the future has gone through several changes.So far,there has not yet been an official or specialized construction plan.University libraries have shown significant enthusiasm for the construction of learning center for the future,however,the construction philosophy,target positioning,construction plan,implementation measures and service content remain somewhat ambiguous.Currently,there are few relevant cases worldwide for university libraries to reference.There is an urgent need of theoretical guidance for the construction of learning center for the future.In this context,this paper comprehensively examines global influential reports on the digital and intelligent transformation of education and research,the multiple national strategic needs of China,the status of learning centers construction at the top 150 universities in the QS World University Rankings and the needs of faculty and students.This paper proposes six aspects on the construction of learning center for the future:creating integrated space,fostering intelligent atmosphere,providing interactive supports,enabling interconnected everything,cultivating innovative capabilities,and nurturing international views.Each specific term in these aspects begins with the letter"I",so"6I"is used as an abbreviation for these aspects.Specifically,the main content of the 6I concept is as follows:1)Creating integrated space,which integrates various elements,including individuals,hardware facilities,tools and software,and information resources,to fully utilize the diverse functionalities of the space and satisfy the multiple needs of faculty and students.2)Fostering intelligent atmosphere to recommend AI-related information resources,offer scenario-based AI literacy training,and enrich AI-themed activities to support the digital and intelligent transformation of education,learning,and research in universities.3)Providing interactive supports,through digital technology and interactive devices,to facilitate interaction and in-depth communication between teachers and students in teaching,learning and research.4)Enabling interconnected everything,through the intelligent interconnection of people,spaces,and information resources,to improve the service efficiency of information resources,spaces and equipment of the library.5)Cultivating innovative capabilities by fully harnessing the library's role in fostering innovative talents and driving research innovation,which is the primary objective of constructing learning center for the future.6)Nurturing international views to enhance the internationalization level of talent development and scientific research of the university.The 6I concept fundamentally aligns with the core idea of"transitioning from 3C(Connection,Content,and Cooperation)to 3I(Integrated,Intelligent,and International)"proposed by the Ministry of Education.In summary,this paper elaborates on the 6I concept,aiming to provide a reference for the construction of learning center for the future,which are of great interest to both the Ministry of Education and the library community,seeking to facilitate the high-quality development of university libraries and enhance their status and impact within universities.1 tab.27 refs.
