Mission Statement and Era Responsibility of Chinese Librarianship(1904-2024)
The mission statement guides the responsibility and actions of the librarianship in modern China.From 1904 to 2024,the modern librarianship in China has undergone 120 years of development.The mission statement of Chinese librarianship has gone through five stages of evolution:1)1904 to 1911,the mission statement centered on enlighten the people was formed,and the librarianship initially achieved a macro-level layout.2)1912 to 1949,the mission statement centered on public education was formed,and process of systematizing the librarianship accelerated.3) 1949 to 1978,the mission statement centered on ideological education was formed,leading to the transformation of librarianship's fundamental ownership through reception and rectification.4)1978 to 1999,the mission statement centered on social services was formed,and the librarianship showed a trend of diversified expansion.5) 2000 to 2024,the mission statement centered on cultural inheritance was formed,and the librarianship continued to promote transformation and upgrading.Librarianship resonates with societal development,effectively promoting economic and social construction as well as the progress of the times.From 1904 to 1911,the librarianship became a stage for social ideological exchange and collision,leading the trend of social change.From 1912 to 1949,the librarianship became an important pillar of culture and education,providing support for achieving the social goal of saving the nation and ensuring its survival.From 1949 to 1978,the librarianship promoted the in-depth development of cultural education,effectively helping to consolidate the new political power.From 1978 to 1999,the librarianship comprehensively promoted social construction with knowledge services as the core,providing knowledge guarantee for the development of reform and opening-up.From 2000 to 2024,the librarianship actively undertook major national development strategies and empowered high-quality economic and social development in the process of digital transformation.The core value of a library lies in its mission statement and practical responsibility centered on knowledge.The library plays an important role in preserving social memory,nurturing Chinese civilization,promoting knowledge innovation,and safeguarding people's rights through practical activities such as gathering knowledge resources,building knowledge order,creating knowledge connections,and seeking knowledge welfare.1 tab.38 refs.
