Study on the Trends of Screen Time Changes among Children and Adolescents in China from 2016 to 2020
Objective:To analyze the trends in adherence to screen time(ST)recommendations, total ST,and different types of ST among children and adolescents in China from 2016 to 2020.Methods:Data were collected from 522 080 children and adolescents aged 9 to 17 from the Na-tional Survey on Physical Activity and Health Behaviors of Children and Adolescents from 2016 to 2020.Binary logistic regression and generalized linear regression models were used to examine the annual trends in ST recommendations adherence rate, total ST,and different types of ST.Results:From 2016 to 2020,the findings are as follows:1)The adherence rate to ST rec-ommendations among Chinese children and adolescents showed a linear increase, rising from 64.4%in 2016 to 68.9%in 2020;2)the total ST and TV ST of Chinese children and adolescents demonstrated a linear decline, while ST spent on mobile phones and computers remained rela-tively stable without significant linear changes;3)variations in ST recommendations adherence rate, total ST,and different types of ST of children and adolescents were observed across differ-ent sociodemographic groups. Conclusions:Overall, there has been a positive trend of stable re-duction in ST among Chinese children and adolescents from 2016 to 2020.However,there was no significant decrease in screen time spent on mobile phones and computers, with some so-ciodemographic groups even experiencing an increase. In the future,it is essential to strengthen the continuous monitoring of ST,especially the trends in new media equipment like smart-phones and tablet computers,to help children and adolescents develop positive screen behaviors and healthy lifestyles.
